Authentic Italian Cuisine
Biga is an Italian-influenced restaurant in downtown San Diego. Handcrafted pizza is their known specialty. I created nine custom, hand-lettered chalkboard menus for Biga. Each menu layout was first applied to the boards by lightly outlining letters with erasable chalk. Then, the final design was hand-lettered with liquid chalk pens. The typefaces and colors used in each board were specifically chosen to complement Biga's brand design and emphasize the authentic Italian atmosphere. After the menus were done, I also hand-lettered custom table numbers and installed a 11' x 8' mural on Biga's interior wall to create a memorable brand experience.

Table Number Tiles
The Biga founder also wanted to create table numbers out of the left-over oven tiles. Once all nine menu designs were completed, I then hand-lettered 45 numbers, front and back, onto the tiles.
I used gold, oil-based sharpies and a final coating sealant to permanently hand-letter the numbers onto each tile. The same typgraphy from the menus was used on the table numbers to keep a consistent brand look.

I also designed and painted an 11' x 8' pig mural on Biga's interior wall. Different pig anatomy parts were hand-lettered in Italian onto the pig silhouette. This calligraphy shows which pig parts Biga uses in a number of their main dishes. Biga's tagline 'Cucinato a Legno' or 'Wood Fired' was added at the bottom to further emphasize Biga's unique brand.
The purpose of the mural was to increase brand awareness, and show off the entertaining, unique atmosphere of the restaurant. The mural was restricted to only black paint to evoke a minimalist, clean feel. The same design elements were again used on the mural to keep the branding consistent throught the restaurant.
